Post Renovation Cleaning Tips for Calgary Homes

Drywall Dust Is the Boss After a Reno

If you just finished a renovation on an inner-city infill in Bridgeland or a bungalow in Ogden, you already know what I'm talking about. That fine white drywall dust settles on every flat surface, works its way into every vent, and then redistributes itself the moment you turn on the furnace. Most people do one wipe-down and think they're done. They're not. Here are honest post renovation cleaning tips that actually move the needle.

Why One Pass Is Never Enough

Drywall compound dust is talc-fine. When you disturb it by wiping a shelf or walking across the floor, a good portion of it becomes airborne again. It settles back down over the next few hours. Then you disturb it again. You can go three or four rounds before the room actually stays clean.

The same thing happens with sawdust from cut trim, grout haze from new tile, and the residue from sanded hardwood floors. Each of those materials behaves differently and needs a slightly different approach. Lumping them all together and doing a single mop is why people are still sneezing two weeks after the contractors leave.

The Order of Operations Matters

Work from the top down, every single time. That sounds obvious, but after a renovation the instinct is to clean whatever looks worst first. Resist it.

  • Start with the ceiling and walls. Use a microfibre mop head on an extension pole. Dry-wipe first, then follow with a lightly damp cloth. If you go damp immediately, dust turns into paste and smears.
  • Hit the vents and returns before you do floors. Pull the vent covers, wash them in the sink, and vacuum inside the duct opening as far as the hose reaches. If you skip this step, your HVAC system will blow dust back into the clean rooms for months.
  • Wipe all cabinetry and millwork. Inside cupboards and drawers too. Dust packs into corners and hinges.
  • Vacuum hard floors with a fine-dust filter before mopping. A regular vacuum without a HEPA filter just exhausts fine particles back into the air. Use a vacuum rated for fine dust, or at minimum change the bag or empty the canister outside.
  • Mop hard floors twice. First pass picks up the bulk. Change the water, then mop again. The second pass is what actually leaves the floor clean.
  • Leave carpet vacuuming for last. Vacuum slowly, two passes in different directions. New carpet or carpet that has been covered during a reno will hold a surprising amount of drywall dust in the fibres.

Specific Situations in Calgary Renovations

Inner-City Infills

A lot of infills in communities like Ramsay, Inglewood, or the west end go up fast with open-concept layouts. That open floor plan means dust from framing or drywall on the second floor migrates freely to the main floor. There are no walls to contain it. Plan on cleaning every level even if the work was confined to one area.

Older Bungalows

A renovated bungalow in Airdrie, Cochrane, or Okotoks often has more texture to deal with. Older plaster walls, wood panel features, popcorn ceilings that were scraped, or original hardwood being refinished each add their own layer of debris. Refinished hardwood floors need a pH-neutral cleaner and light mopping, not a soaking wet mop. Too much water on a freshly finished floor can cloud the finish.

Bathroom and Kitchen Tile Work

Grout haze is a different problem from drywall dust. It is a film of dried grout that sits on tile faces. The window to remove it with water and a scrubby pad is relatively short after installation. If it has cured hard, you may need a grout haze remover from a tile supply store. Test it in a corner first.

What Professionals Do That Most People Skip

When our team handles a post renovation clean in Chestermere or anywhere across Calgary, a few things come up every time. We bring microfibre cloths in bulk because they load up with dust fast and you need to swap them constantly. We also do a second visual pass under raking light, meaning a flashlight or lamp held at a low angle to the surface. That low-angle light catches dust and smears that look invisible under normal overhead lighting. It sounds simple but it catches a lot.

We also check inside light fixtures. Potlights and pendant housings trap dust and burn it slightly when the light runs, which causes that faint burnt smell people notice after a reno.

When to Call Someone In

A full post renovation clean is physically demanding and time-consuming. The size of the home, how much work was done, whether it was a single room or a whole-home gut, and the current condition all drive how long it takes. Our move-in and move-out cleaning service and our deep cleaning service are both well-suited to post-reno situations. We can also handle the turnover if it is an Airbnb or rental property you have just finished upgrading.
