Spring Window Cleaning Calgary: Gravel Dust & Chinook Grime

Why Calgary Windows Look So Bad Every April

If you walk up to your windows in April and wonder how they got so grimy, you're not imagining it. Calgary winters are genuinely hard on glass, and the combination of things that happen between November and March leaves a residue that a quick wipe with a wet cloth won't touch.

The Gravel Dust Problem

The City of Calgary, along with Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, and Okotoks, uses sand and gravel on roads and sidewalks all winter. When chinooks roll in and temperatures jump 20 degrees in a day, that gravel dries out fast. Traffic grinds it into a fine silica dust, and the wind carries it everywhere. It settles on your window glass, works into the tracks, and coats your screens. By the time the last frost is done, you've got several months of that layered on every window facing the street.

Chinook Grime Is Its Own Category

Chinooks are warm and they feel amazing, but they also pull air across a lot of dry prairie before it hits Calgary. That air carries particulates, soil, and whatever is sitting on the ground. When it hits a cold window surface, the moisture condenses slightly and the particles stick. You end up with a filmy, streaky residue that is not the same as regular rain dirt. It bonds a little differently and needs a proper cleaning solution to cut through it, not just water.

The Right Way to Clean Windows in Spring

There is an order to this. If you skip steps, you end up spreading dirt around or scratching the glass.

  • Start with the tracks and frames. Use a dry brush or old toothbrush to loosen the compacted grit in the tracks. Then vacuum it out. If you wet the tracks first, the grit turns to mud and gets harder to remove.
  • Rinse the glass before you scrub it. Gravel dust is abrasive. If you drag a cloth across dry, gritty glass, you can leave fine scratches. A rinse first loosens the particles so they don't grind against the surface.
  • Use a proper glass cleaning solution. A small amount of dish soap in warm water works well. White vinegar diluted with water also cuts through chinook film. Avoid anything with ammonia on tinted windows.
  • Clean with a microfibre cloth or a squeegee. A squeegee gives a streak-free result faster than cloths if you use it correctly: wipe the blade after each pass and overlap your strokes slightly. For smaller panes, a lint-free microfibre cloth works fine.
  • Do the screens separately. Take them out if you can. Lay them flat, spray with soapy water, scrub gently with a soft brush, rinse, and let them dry fully before putting them back. A damp screen put back on a window frame will attract dust immediately.
  • Dry the tracks after cleaning. Standing water in aluminum tracks leads to oxidation and staining over time. A dry cloth or paper towel in the channel takes 30 seconds and saves you a headache later.

What Makes the Job Take Longer Than People Expect

Most people underestimate the time because they're only thinking about the glass. A standard two-storey home in Calgary might have 18 to 24 window units. Each one has glass on both sides, a frame, tracks, and a screen. When all of that is included, you're looking at a real time commitment, especially if the windows haven't been properly cleaned since last spring.

The condition matters a lot too. A window that gets cleaned twice a year takes a fraction of the time compared to one that hasn't been touched in three years. Hardened mineral deposits from sprinklers, deep-set gravel film, and corroded tracks all add time.

When It Makes Sense to Have Someone Do It

Honestly, if you have two floors, a lot of windows, or windows that are difficult to reach safely, it is worth having a professional handle it. Ladders on uneven spring ground are where people get hurt, and it happens more than anyone talks about.

At Maid On Time Cleaning, we cover Calgary and the surrounding areas including Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, and Okotoks. Window cleaning is something we include as part of our deep cleaning service, and it's also something clients add on to regular recurring cleans. If you're getting a move-in or move-out clean done, it's almost always worth adding windows to that booking because a new tenant or buyer notices glass immediately.

What drives the time and cost of the job is straightforward: the number of windows, how accessible they are, how long it's been since they were last cleaned, and whether screens and tracks are included. We don't post prices because every home is different. Send us a quick text with your address and a rough window count and we'll give you an exact number.

One More Thing Worth Knowing

The best time to do spring window cleaning in Calgary is after the last major freeze-thaw cycle, which is usually mid to late April. Cleaning them too early means another round of grit lands on the glass before the roads are swept. Wait until the city has done its spring street sweeping in your neighbourhood and you'll get more time out of the clean.
